Emily Norman

Emily Norman

With KIND since 2018, Emily Norman, JD, assumed her current role as managing director of KIND’s Hartford, CT office in April 2023. In this role, she oversees a field office team of 6 legal practitioners and a 2-person social services team.  As managing director, she is the senior representative of the organization at the local level, engaging government, private sector law partners, community stakeholders and media to advance KIND’s mission. She is responsible for program quality and deliverables; recruitment, training and mentoring of local pro bono partners, and integration/collaboration of her legal and social services team with KIND colleagues across the country.

Emily started at KIND as a pro bono coordinating attorney, mentoring pro bono attorneys on over 100 cases of children seeking legal relief (e.g., Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) and asylum). She was later promoted to Senior Attorney before being named Supervising Attorney of KIND’s detained team in New York City.  There, she oversaw delivery of legal services to migrant children detained in a 900-bed Office of Refugee Resettlement facility. Three internships during law school—at the Community Legal Services and Counseling Center in Cambridge, MA, Equis: Justicia Para Las Mujeres in Mexico City, and with the American Civil Liberties Union in Boston, MA—cemented her career trajectory towards immigration and equal justice. Post-law school, Emily spent 2 ½ years in Mexico City as a U.S. Attorney at the Instituto para las Mujeres en la Migracion (Institute for Women in Migration) providing legal services to deported and returned migrant women and their children. She also assisted with transnational custody cases due to family separation after deportation. Emily began her career as a history teacher at the Mott Hall Science and Technology Academy in Bronx, New York under the auspices of “Teach for America.”

Emily earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in international affairs and history from the George Washington University in Washington, DC (2008), a Master of Science degree in teaching from Fordham University in New York City (2011), and her law degree from Harvard Law School in Cambridge, MA (2015). Emily is fluent in Spanish and a member of the Massachusetts bar.
